MoBlack Records’ 390th release showcases two definitive remixes of Deli from the 2019 album “Miri” by Malian virtuoso Bassekou Kouyate featuring Ngoni Ba, his vibrant ensemble comprised of griots strumming varying sizes of the traditional West African lute (the ngoni), and the salient Amy Sacko on vocals. Though Miri limns a more reflective, rootsy Kouyate, the producer/instrumentalist has honed the infusion of electric flair in his productions, and a bit of that in Deli, vested both remixers with the tools to take their versions to wander far off in the Afro House realm. MoBlack’s founding father and namesake, Mimmo Falcone grabs Kouyate’s oeuvre by its corners and basks in its euphonic harbor, cutting a little edge, raising the temperature, and ladling the right amount of groove to render a striking dance track that caters to all senses, and is very decisively, MoBlack. Intermeshing robust bass, tender chords and a solemn constant at the backdrop, Mimmo Falcone cradles Deli’s Bamana lyrics in intricate soundscapes, letting the song about friendship circumvent the ulterior body in motion, from toes to fingers, before a stirring climax keels over by the heart, where it lingers. On the complementary, Italian duo Bayaka gleams in the limelight, casting their 9:28 minute rework adrift in mesmeric timbre from the get-go. Dovetailing rippling synths and invigorating electro-modulations in perfect balance with the original’s lush percussion and acoustic swagger, Cristian and Giorgio tints B-side with a bit of enigmatic depth that feels thoughtful and airiness that is liberating at the same time, resounding a friendship you’d want to last a lifetime and a dance you wish would never end.
