Finnish tech-house legend Jori Hulkkonen appears next for Torontonian imprint My Favorite Robot. The man otherwise known as Zyntherius’ relationship with the label reaches back to 2012 – when they released his eighth studio album under the Third Culture guise. He’s now onto his third full length for the crew in the form of the brand new (and charmingly titled!) Don’t Believe In Happiness ?LP. It’s a collection of modern synthpop anthems that give a respectful nod back to the ’80s. Track titles such as “We Will Tear Love Apart Again” should give you a hint at where he’s coming from – this bittersweet moment powered by nothing more than an arpeggio and Hulkkonen’s gothic baritone and it is pure genius. Despite the po-faced song titles, they’re not all doom and gloom – take the bubblegum cinematics of “Sometimes You Win, But Not Very Often” for instance which wouldn’t have been out of place on the Drive soundtrack. Elsewhere, there’s some sexy and slinky dancefloor energy more typical of Hulkkonen on the electro-house groove “Breen Fantasy” and even some straight up techno to approach the peak time on the rather hypnotic “Moon Is Real”. A cohesive effort all in all.
