On the cover of his debut album, Rodhad looks like MMA fighter Conor McGregor covered in war paint, and this somewhat unsettling image translates to the music. The German DJ earned his recognition as a purveyor of linear techno, but Anxious manages to go farther than that while still resounding to an undercurrent of unease. “Unleash” is a brooding symphonic piece, while “Escape” is based on hollowed out, mid-tempo drums, garbled vocals and a muddy bass. “Awash” takes its cue from a similar tempo, but on this occasion, echoes of light ambient textures seek to break through the prevalent murky, rhythm. It’s only a brief respite and “Target Line”, his collaboration with Vril, is built on the kind of queasy sub-bass that will serve to heighten the listener’s sense of discomfort when they hear it.
