Kayroy is Finnian Langham, and artist who in the last 12 months has released on Whiskey Disco and Hotfoot and turned plenty of heads with his mature mix of funk, disco, house, boogie and soul.
Opener ‘Imagine’, produced with fellow Melbournite GREETINGS, is a glistening space disco cut with a sense of nostalgia rushing through its retro-future chords. It’s filled with positive energy and gorgeous arps. ‘Orbitale’ gets your ass to wiggle with its withering sci-fi chords and boogie bass. The whole thing shimmers and shines like a star in the night sky and fills you with warmth. The grown-up disco vibes continue on ‘Galapagos’ with its mellow acid bass, big stabs and arps and kaleidoscopic colours. Last of all is the Dawn Again remix of ‘Imagine’ which takes you to an old school chill out room with its dreamy chords and hazy breakbeats all sinking you deep into a post-rave comedown. This is a rich new EP from one of the fastest rising new names in the game.
REVIEW
While best known for the more Balearic and downtempo side of its output, Italian imprint Hell Yeah is not averse to releasing the odd dancefloor-focused EP from time to time. This missive from Australian producer and sometime Whiskey Disco regular Kayroy snugly fits that category. The headline attraction is arguably GREETINGS collaboration “Imagine”, a wonderfully colourful combination of cascading electronic melodies, breezy piano stabs, nu-disco drums and a squelchy bassline straight out of the NYC freestyle playbook. Dawn Again provides the obligatory remix, successfully re-imagining the track as a breakbeat driven chunk of bass-heavy dream house warmth. The EP’s other tracks, “Orbitale” and ” Galapegos”, are both Galaxians style chunks of revivalist electrofunk cheeriness smothered in kaleidoscopic synth sounds.
